How to play Retro Kitchen

Retro Kitchen is the third Ball And Wall episode, in pixel art: 15 rounds of cooking in five places, from a home kitchen through a food truck, a sushi bar and a pizzeria to a bakery. Here you do not have to break every block: you cook the recipe on the board on the left. Hit an ingredient twice to cook it, then catch its dish with your rolling pin, in the order of the recipe. The round is won when the recipe is done.

Scoring

A brick gives 10 points, a hit on an ingredient 20 and a rotten plate 5. A dish caught in its turn gives 100 times its step of the recipe (100, 200, 300, 400); a dish out of turn costs 1 point, and so does caught rot. A finished recipe gives 1000 points plus 10 for every second under two minutes, so quick cooking pays.

Blocks in Retro Kitchen

  • Brick: breaks with one hit; if an ingredient the recipe needs is gone, it comes back in a brick’s place.
  • Ingredient: the first hit cuts it (cracks, slices, peels), the second cooks it (fries, bakes, boils); then its dish falls.
  • Dish: catch it with the rolling pin: in the recipe’s order it is a step done, out of order it costs a point.
  • Steel tray: cannot be broken.
  • Rotten food: breaks with one hit, and its rot falls: catching it costs a point and brings a random trouble.
  • Kitchen obstacle: goes to the side and back and cannot be broken; every place has its own (a pot, a sushi plate, a pizza peel, a mixing bowl).

What comes in which rounds

  • Rounds 1–3: home: breakfast, lunch and dinner on a cutting board; rotten food from round 2.
  • Rounds 4–6: a food truck: hot dogs, burgers, lemonade and popcorn; kitchen obstacles from round 5.
  • Rounds 7–9: a sushi bar: sushi, tempura and ramen.
  • Rounds 10–12: a pizzeria: pizza, margherita, mushrooms and lasagne.
  • Rounds 13–15: a bakery: croissants, coffee, cake and doughnuts.

Power-ups and power-downs

A bonus sometimes falls out of a broken block. Catch it with your paddle.

Good ones

  • Chili: a fiery ball that flies through the blocks.
  • Cherries: you play with three balls at once.
  • Honey: the ball sticks to the rolling pin until you release it.
  • Long rolling pin: the rolling pin gets longer for a while.
  • Ice cream: the ball slows down.
  • Apple: one more life.
  • Watermelon: the ball grows.
  • Pepper: the rolling pin shoots.
  • Helper board: a second paddle, played by the computer, helps you.
  • Cake: +100 points.

Bad ones

  • Garlic: the rolling pin shrinks for a while.
  • Cocktail: the ball flies unsteadily.
  • Salt in the eyes: left and right are swapped for a while.
  • Espresso: the ball speeds up.
  • Blueberries: the ball gets smaller.
  • Kettle: the kitchen shakes.
  • Steaming pot: steam covers part of the board.
  • Poison: one of your lives is gone.

Tips

  • Watch the recipe on the left: the blinking step is the dish to catch next.
  • Cook first the ingredient the recipe needs now; the others can wait.
  • Let a wrong dish fall: catching it costs a point.
  • Do not catch the red capsules: they bring trouble, not help.
